Hello, Privyet, Namaste to all the Spinach and Yoga readers!!
Interview with Cate Stillman of Yoga Healer
We tend to idealize people, theories, and traditions and try to copy them to our life. This happens with ayurveda a lot. Breaking tradition is looked down upon.
When I started doing yoga as a 12 year old and entertained myself with the idea of reaching enlightenment by the time I grow up, the idea of proper diet was starting to take a firm hold in my mind. Yogic texts that I read spoke about a pure sattvic diet that was mandatory for a true yogi. Meat, animal flesh, eggs were considered dull, heavy, impure. They were not supposed to be on a yogi’s menu.
A lot of my clients and friends find Ayurveda very intuitive once they start studying it. However, applying it to daily life, especially cooking and eating can be a bit overwhelming at first. Don’t worry, it gets much easier with time!
I often get emails and personal questions about diets and nutrition. ‘Is vegan better than paleo, is raw a pre-requisite to healing, is meat really bad?’ The variations of these questions are endless but at the end it all comes down to one:
For a long time I have been noticing that not everything that I eat makes me feel equally well. The more I pay attention to my stomach before and after food, the more information my body provides. While I am still learning to decipher my body’s feedback, one finding keeps emerging more often than others: THE SIMPLER THE DISH, THE LESS ENERGY IT REQUIRES TO DIGEST. Which means, I have more energy left to do other things like write, think, teach, do yoga, and just enjoy my life.
I always try to pay attention to my body’s cues when it comes to nutrition. My body is given authority over outside experts. If something feels right, I’ll keep it. If it feels draining, heavy, or drying, it’s going no matter what someone else is saying.
Ever feel like you need another two hours of sleep after your alarm goes off? Or can barely keep your eyes open during a work meeting? Energy is a precious substance. Everyone craves more of it. Supplement companies work hard to satisfy the ever growing demand for energy-increasing powders and pills, while people just seem to keep getting more tired.
Some of you know that recently I started my journey to become a wellness consultant with Wellcoaches and recently successfully passed my exams! The idea behind getting this certification was to get necessary tools and to practice my coaching skills to help those who are looking to create a better state of wellness. These tools include vision creation, goal setting, creating strategies, and overcoming barriers on the way to holistic (whole) wellness. Since the definition of wellness is different for everyone, this program focused on providing us with tools to create customized personal programs where the client takes the reigns and guides the process.
A few days ago I wrote about listening to your body when it comes to finding a perfect personalized diet. Today I want to share my story about finding a perfect personalized workout method using your body’s feedback and some common sense.
