It’s been 5 days since I got back from my Panchakarma retreat at the Ayurvedic Institute in NM. Panchakarma is a traditional ayurvedic detoxification program. It includes a specific diet, treatments, and an herb regimen. The goal is to help the body get rid of the waste and come back into balance.
What do you think would happen if you gave up your rules around food? What if you ate what you wanted, when you wanted, as much as you wanted and exercised also only when you felt like it? Do you think you would turn into a fat immobile pumpkin? Would you be brave enough to ever see what would actually happen?
A lot of my clients and friends find Ayurveda very intuitive once they start studying it. However, applying it to daily life, especially cooking and eating can be a bit overwhelming at first. Don’t worry, it gets much easier with time!
1 out of every 3 people experiences some sort of digestive unease on a daily basis. It ranges from an unpleasant heavy feeling, to bloating, to heartburn, to acid reflux, pain, gas, constipation, or diarrhea, burping or distension. None of these are pleasant. Most of them can have a negative effect on the way we spend our day, what we accomplish and how we feel about our body.
To begin, I would like to share something with you: I am not a perfect eater. I don’t always eat what’s best for my body and my digestion. I do overeat sometimes when stressed or bored. And I do love my sweets, even though they might be considered ‘healthy’ by general standards.
As an Indian, I always knew the uses and benefits of spices. Indian cuisine incorporates a variety of spices and my household was no different. My mother taught me how each spice is used and its benefits and medicinal qualities.
In the last few days of writing my book, I felt very stuck. I felt so torn between contradicting research on nutrition, my personal experiences, stories that I hear from my clients, parents who are doctors, and my friends…. It seemed that there is no agreement, no final TRUTH when it comes to what our bodies thrive on both physically and spiritually.
For the past 7 days I was on an ayurvedic cleanse in preparation for my Panchakarma treatment with Dr Lad at the Ayurvedic Institute in ABQ, NM. It is the beginning of my month-long detox journey that will come to an end on May 6th. This week all my detox food was made by the ayurvedic chef Divya at Bhagavat Life. My boyfriend and a few of my clients were doing the same cleanse for 5 days. After the 5 days were over, I cooked all the food myself.
Today I want to introduce you to a great resource and an amazing yogi who is leading others to live in more alignment with their best selves. Please meet:
