Delivering Happiness III - Create a Community of Like Minded People

Community

Have you ever noticed that certain studios have a predictable profile of their average student in terms of how they look, what they think, or even what they eat? It usually happens because each studio has a slightly different focus and style. Students whose interests are similar to the ones of the studio will stick around. With time it creates a community of people who share similar goals, ideas, and support each other. Their energy and enthusiasm feed of off each other. There is no need to convince anyone who doesn’t like your classes or studio environment to stay or change your inner self to accommodate them. Instead seek out students who like your style and want to learn from you. Similar reasoning works when looking for new teachers for the studio. Support the community and create strong honest relationships.

Question: Do you have a community of like-minded people who can support you or do you try to fit in into multiple groups and find yourself standing lonely instead?

Example: Jivamukti style has a large following of people who share similar ideals and values. While some might see it almost as a cult, others find support and the missing structure there. Strala teachers and students is another good example. Tara Stilesand Mike Taylor welcomed teachers from various backgrounds to the studio but all of them have a passion for wellness and health. Everyone is very supportive of each other’s projects and ideas. This support comes in terms of cross promoting each other on facebook and twitter, sharing advice, and encouragement.

Next Steps: Be honest with yourself and trust your instincts. If you are attracted to a certain style, a group of teachers or students, develop this relationship and nurture it. Help people who you believe in and they will support you back when the time comes!

My intention: Stay true to my yoga community of students and other teachers while being open-minded about other styles, teachings, approaches. Support fellow teachers in their style and learn from them.
