‘Calm and Clean’ – A Special Green Juice Recipe

Functional Juice to Calm the Nerves and Clean the Colon

Do you drink green juice because you know that they are supposed to be good for you or because everyone is doing it? How does your body feels when you drink green juices: light or bloated, tired or energized, hungry or nourished? Does your body respond the same way to all kinds of green juices or does prefer some greens to others? These are just some of the questions that you should have a very clear answer to if you are serious about finding your personal, individual, customized diet.

As with exercise and food, I like to get the most out of my green juice in terms of what they do for my body. Not all juices are equal! Some are like a concentrated wholefood supplement that provides a ton of nutrition at a very low calorie exchange while others just bring on a sugar rush even if they look green!

I often add spices (cinnamon, cayenne, cumin, or fennel) for an additional sugar balancing and cleansing effect. A splash of Aloe Vera helps absorption and reduces bloating. Maca powder goes in as a booster for adrenal glands. And Camu Camu can be thrown in for an extra vitamin C. You can also experiment with Bee Pollen, Coconut Vinegar, and Reishi Mushrooms. Let your imagination guide you!

With so many of my friends embarking on juice cleanses, I often hear people complaining of bloating and poor elimination while limiting food intake to fresh juices. While this is to be expected on a diet that is lacking fiber, it doesn’t mean that you need to wait for a week to go the bathroom! Quite the opposite, the cleanse is incomplete, if nothing is coming out!

To help out all juice lovers I created a ‘Calm and Clean” Green Juice with Magnesium and Cinnamon. It has magnesium to help move things along while balancing the bloating queen Vata with cinnamon, fennel, and sour lemon. Magnesium has many roles in our body. Here is some info:

Every organ in the body — especially the heart, muscles, and kidneys — needs the mineral magnesium. It also contributes to the makeup of teeth and bones. Most important, it activates enzymes, contributes to energy production, and helps regulate calcium levels, as well as copper, zinc, potassium, vitamin D, and other important nutrients in the body.

Symptoms of magnesium deficiency may include agitation and anxiety, restless leg syndrome (RLS), sleep disorders, irritability, digestive issues, etc.. Read more: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/magnesium-000313.htm#ixzz1sS1HmxYl

‘Calm and Clean’ Green Juice:

  • 3-4 Leave Rainbow Swiss Chard
  • 1 small or 1/2 large grapefruit
  • 1 fennel bulb and greens
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1/2 large cucumber or 1 small
  • a few stalks of parsley
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1-3 tbsp Natural Vitality Calm Plus Calcium

Juice all the veggies and then add cinnamon and Calm powder. Mix everything and drink on an empty stomach, preferably in the 2nd half of the day. This magnesium formula is not strong enough to act as a laxative but think of it instead as a digesting helper. If you are really clogged up then you might want to try using Oxy Powder  which is also magnesium based but a lot stronger. The good thing about magnesium is that it is not habit-forming like some herbs.

Enjoy and Be Clean!

Natural Vitality Calm Plus Calcium Info:

Natural Calm Plus Calcium utilizes the same advanced technology as Natural Calm. The minerals in this product go into total solution in their ionic form and are readily available to the body. Water acts as a carrier and transports the minerals quickly to where they are needed by the body. Natural Calm Plus Calcium contains added nutrients to ensure that the calcium is absorbed and utilized by the body. It is the most advanced formula available for the utilization of calcium. This is particularly important as calcium will not be efficiently assimilated without these other nutrients being present. In addition to calcium, the product contains magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin D and boron, which assist in the assimilation, utilization and distribution of the calcium within the body. This results in the creation of strong bones, joints and connective tissue, and a healthy, active immune system to protect against invasion of bacteria, viruses and other uninvited guests. This product is ideal for men and women of all ages and in particular for seniors, as it helps in the reversal of bone loss, joint, cartilage and connective tissue deterioration, and malfunction of the various glands and their emission of hormones. It is also ideal for pregnant women, as it will help to supply the essential calcium needed by the mother and baby for the development of a robust body with strong bones. Natural Calm Plus Calcium is formulated with 3 parts magnesium to 2 parts calcium, which will prevent a surplus of calcium robbing the body’s vital magnesium supply and avoid the symptoms associated with depleted levels of magnesium.

How To Achieve Success In Diet And Work By Taming Your Lizard Brain

Are You Acting as a Scared Lizard?

Do you wish that your body was in a better shape or that your name would be widely recognized in your industry? Are you scared of never realizing your full potential? Most of us are!

The truth is, that to leap forward towards your happy future you need to do something scary. Instead of sticking to a safe time-proven routine, you need to push your boundaries and constantly move past the precautions whispered by your internal voice.

Why Should You Willingly Create Discomfort?

As Seth Godin would say, it feels safe and comfy at the point where you are now: you know what’s coming, what’s on your schedule and how to make it through the day.

Our lizard brain doesn’t want us to move away from that stable point. Safety over failure, status quo over a chance of exhilarating success.

If you say to yourself something along these lines, it is your lizard brain talking:

  • One day I will submit my pictures to a contest but not today. Today they are still not good enough
  • At some point I will start reaching out to write guest posts and connect to a local editorial or a magazine but not today. Today I write for my baby blog because no one can refuse me and my readers are always there to read it.
  • There is no point trying a new exercise routine because mine works ok even though there haven’t been any significant results. What if a new one is even worse?
  • I won’t try a new diet because nothing works for me and my metabolism is slow anyways
  • Nothing will fix my bloated stomach because that’s the way my digestion works, it’s in my DNA to suffer and live on digestive supplements

When you hear this mental chatter, tell your lizard brain ‘hi, I hear you but I won’t listen to you‘ and do what needs to be done to improve and leap forward.

My lizard brain always starts its ‘you are not good enough‘ speech as soon as I start on a new project. In the back of my head, I hear a very persistent whisper telling me that it is a lot safer not to plan a new workshop because there is a chance that it will fail, that no one will sign up. It tells me that there are many yoga teachers that have more experience and a larger following so their message must be better. It insists that there are already enough wellness coaches and writers working hard to inspire people to take charge of their life. Why would people come to someone as young as myself and listen to my advice? It keeps talking and talking until I either make it shut up or it takes over and I go have a cookie instead, feeling completely unworthy of what I do. That happens, too!

Most of the time, however, I can turn off the lizard brain and push forward with an exciting new project. The best thing is that it doesn’t matter whether the project fails or succeeds. What matters is that I do what I love, I help people, I make amazing new friends, and I feel inspired by the amazing transformation stories from my clients. Seeing even one person becoming mindful and passionate about health is worth a lot more than money can buy. And by the way, the money comes as well, when you do what you are meant to do:)

You can do it! You can quiet your internal voice who wants you to hide in a safe cave. You can be the best in your field or create an innovative product. You can rewire your body to produce enough energy to run marathons and you can make your digestion very efficient.

Some things that you try won’t be successful but some things will. You need to do uncomfortable, challenging things on a regular basis to find what works and succeed.

Rejection as Feedback

Rejection and failure might be scary but if you think about it, rejection is a type of feedback that let’s you improve and move forward. Without it you will never know if you are good enough and you won’t be able to improve.

A diet that suits your body, a workout routine that leaves you feeling strong and energized, recognition of your work in the field and beyond – these things come when you break the status quo and try new things.

So what would it take to leap forward in the field that is important to you right now? (your health, your career, your relationship)

IMPORTANT: If you take a few mins to think about it and write it out in the comments section or on the paper, you are much more likely to act on it! So don’t let your lizard brain to tempt you into just ignoring this post and moving on with your day in a routine way. Leap forward right now!)

Where Does Happiness Come From? And Much More!

Saturday Information and Inspiration:

Healthy & tasty recipes, interesting and thought-provoking articles, inspirational videos and fun workout ideas. I will share at least one of each every Saturday!

Read:

1. ‘Coffee: The great energy sapper.’ - You got to read this even if you are not planning to quit coffee any time soon. Knowledge is power. You need to know what you put in your body and how it effects you.

Caffeine does not provide energy — only chemical stimulation. The perceived energy comes from the body’s struggle to adapt to increased blood levels of stress hormones… Using coffee for mood-enhancement is a short-term blessing and a long-term curse. While the initial adrenal stimulation may provide a transient anti-fatigue ‘lift,’ caffeine’s ultimate mood effect is a letdown, either subtle or profound. Advertisers and coffee ‘institutes’ have kept this side of caffeine from public view…
“While caffeine users may feel more alert, the experience is simply one of increased sensory and motor activity (dilated pupils, increased heart rate, and higher blood pressure). The quality of thought and recall is improved no more than the quality of music is improved when played at a higher volume or speed.”

2. How to go from FEAR to FREEDOM, one step at a time – a great post at Zen Habits

Cook:

Oh She Glows: Banana Split Bites

1. Let’s start with a yummy dessert! Who said that you need to wait until the end of the meal for sweets?! According to Ayurveda sweets should go first. Angela from Oh She Glows posted an amazing recipe this week: simple, elegant and delicious! May I present to you Mess Free Banana Split Bites‘.

2. Gena at Choosing Raw shared a great Spring recipe with sprouts that she got at Union Square Farmer’s Market. Even though quite pricey those sprouts are amazing for nutrients! Try this Sprout Salad with Smoky Guacamole

Watch: If you ever wonder why some people are optimists no matter what and others are unhappy most of the time, watch this video with Dan Gilbert on TED – Why Are We Happy?

Listen: If you mind is rambling nonstop and meditation seems off the limits, listen to this guided meditation to silent your mind.

Workout: Booty and Leg workout with Eat Spin Run and a fun dancing workout for your waist with Tiffany Rothe. After shaking your booty, finish up with this Energizing Yoga flow

Chocolate Acai Sauce With Hemp Seeds

Thursday Ayurvedic Eats

About 2 weeks ago my friend Katerina who wrote about ‘Learning to Let Go‘ in a yesterday’s post and I decided to try to refuse sugar for a while. Everything that contained white sugar or other forms of concentrated sugar including agave and all kinds of syrups had to go. I kept fruit and stevia. Since sweet things is my weak spot, no raw desserts, no raw chocolate or macaroons was tough!!! But wherever there is a will, there is a way! After a week cravings subsided and taste buds became a lot more sensitive. Things that seemed pleasantly sweet before now seem too sweet. Green Giant smoothie from The Juice Press that has spinach, kale, coconut meat and water, spirulina, apple, lemon, cayenne and 1 date tasted too sweet to drink when I got it yesterday. I couldn’t believe my tongue!

Chocolate Acai Sauce Ingredients

One thing that seemed just right in term of sweetness, calories, and nutrients was an accidentally invented Chocolate Acai fruit salad with hemp seeds. That creamy deliciousness made my heart sing! Special ingredients in the sauce make this fruit salad into a nutrient dense powerhouse:

  • It’s easy to make and easy to digest.
  • It won’t spike up your blood sugar and there are no empty wasted calories.
  • Each bite is loaded with flavor, vitamins, and minerals.
  • It is an Omega 3, fiber, protein and antioxidant heaven:)

I can already see you getting impatient to see what’s in this magical recipe! We are almost there. Let me just tell you that you can have this dish for dessert or for breakfast and that it gets better after a few hours in the fridge when all the flavors absorb.

Chocolate Acai Sauce with Hemp Seeds

Chocolate Acai Fruit Salad with Hemp Seeds

Ingredients:

  • 1 Packet of Unsweetened Acai puree. I usedSambazon Pure Acai
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder or for an extra kick try Cococeps with Certified Organic Cocoa, Full-Spectrum Micronized Cordyceps & Reishi*
  • 2 tbs hemp seeds
  • vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch of cayenne
  • a few drops of stevia
  • 1/3 cup water or almond milk (use more a less depending on the desired consistency)

Mix everything together and pour over fruits. If you are making a fruit salad, chop 1 apple or pear, 1/2 blueberries, 1/2 banana. Sprinkle with hemp seeds.

When making the sauce, remember that cardamom, cinnamon, and cayenne have a special sugar balancing and metabolism boosting role! So don’t skip them!

*Linda Wagner, a very inspiring and creative health coach wrote about using Cococeps when trying to kick the coffee habit. Read about it here

Let Go and Smile! The Quickest Way to Finding Happiness in Life

Today is the last round of posts on India trip 2012. I shared my 6 Life-Changing Lessons from India a couple of weeks ago and then Irina, Gillian, Natalya, Tanya wrote about their incredible experiences yesterday. Today Jennifer and Katerina contemplate on their lessons learned from our unforgettable adventure. Smiles and Letting Go big time!

You Have a Secret Super Power: Smile!

Jennifer Morales – A true yogi who shares her passion for this ancient science with her lucky students in San Francisco:

The first time I went to India, I visited Kerala in the Southern part of the country. I immediately fell in love with that beautiful state, the people, food, culture, and its bright colors. But most of all, I remembered my amazing experience of being surrounded by beautiful souls.

Every place I visited, every door I walked into, every time I made eye contact with a local, I ALWAYS got a beautiful, sincere, welcoming smile. A genuine smile that came straight from the heart and shined right out through their eyes.

That is why I had to go back and explore North India this time. Of course, I wanted to visit the spectacular Taj Mahal, the beautiful Hindu temples, Varanasi (the oldest town in the world), swim in the holy waters of the Ganges River, take an elephant ride through the Ambert Fort in Jaipur and more, but what truly makes India so beautiful, unforgettable and special, is its people.

Despite the adversities they might confront every day like poverty and living in a place without the comforts of the Western world, it seems to me like they have accepted things the way they are, and there is no point to being miserable with themselves or toward others.

Here in America, people walk past each other as if we were robots. We don’t make eye contact, we don’t smile at each other, we don’t acknowledge each others presence, and if you do, people look at you as if you were a crazy person.

We are so blessed for living in a country where even the poorest person still has some comforts available to them. So why are we so indifferent towards others? We have so many reasons to walk down the street with a smile and say hello to the person standing next to us. We are not enemies. Even if we don’t share the same beliefs, we all come from the same place, we are made of the same energy and in our own way we are looking for the happiness and peace that we each deserve.

Mother Teresa said “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing”.

Getting Married at Taj Mahal

Stop being a robot and smile more often, remember that you have so many reasons to do so. Acknowledging the presence of others might be the first step. Accepting your reality as it is might be the second. Start with this easy suggestion, next time you go to your yoga class smile to the person next to you. They might smile back and you might make a new friend.

Visiting India has been a life changing experience. I was lucky enough to meet the love of my life on my first visit in Kerala, I met wonderful people who not only became my dear friends, but but I like to call them my India family. Their love and support on the day my now husband and I exchanged our vows at the Taj Mahal, made the experience even more special.

Talking about the endless lessons I learned in that beautiful country would take numerous pages, but I will share with you later. For now all I can say is that appreciation of the blessings in my life both material and invisible, acceptance of whatever adversity might knock on my door, and smiling more often, are my top three lessons.

When we appreciate things, we get more of what we have, when you accept your reality you free yourself from suffering, and when you smile your brain smiles, your body relaxes, your mood changes in a positive way, and it opens the door to make new friends.

Namaste.

Learning to Let Go and Finding the Inner Child

Katerina Gubina – an amazing photographer with a passion for exotic adventures and healthy food:

The spontaneous trip to India started with the thought of letting go of all the expectations, labels and the familiar patterns and just being open to new experiences of being at an ashram.

Nothing that we commonly label ‘normal’ was present at the ashram- from waking up to the gong at 4am, Spartan living conditions to the surrounding environment – chaotic mess of the wandering unrestrained bulls, cows, crazy monkeys, or loud tooting motor bikes.

Letting go of the soreness from sitting motionless in the Lotus position for hours, accepting yoga classes held in a traditional Indian style were quite an intense practice on its own.

The first three days my body was shattering repeatedly “You’ve got to be kidding me!”. But once the concept that ‘we are not our body’ was introduced, it became much more manageable to look at the body as an instrument, to let go of the pain and surrender to the flow of brain twisters in the lotus position.

It was painful both physically and mentally, but the idea of letting go and just being in the moment was prevailing. It allowed me to appreciate the uniqueness of the situation even more, by accepting the new wave of knowledge and just being open-minded.

Celebrating Holi

The lectures and the questions raised were pretty familiar, but either the energy of the holy place, or the concentration of all the factors gave me the tingling sensation of my life turning upside down inside of my mind.

Opening up the new levels of the mind and the body, learning that there are many layers in the mind through which we can go down to the very depths of ourselves by doing breathing exercises or yoga Nidra. Seeing the results of practice was incredible!

The uniqueness came from many angles and brought many things that I enjoyed greatly.

The reminders to appreciate unpredictability and to be fully present in the NOW were popping up everyday with the exciting force. The amazing fun experiences brought back the colors of life and its fun patterns during the celebration of the most vibrant holiday – Holi.

Embracing being PINK

Boy did I feel for Titanic, when was trying to scrub off the paint in the cold water after the celebration. So when the face was still eggplant-colored and the body was freezing beyond endurance I decided to let go and be. PINK. For days.

So many revelations came out of being at the Ashram.

  • Learning to let go and be inside was a big one.
  • The realization that all the joy and happiness in the world is only inside, and it is now. The bliss, the happiness, the whatever you might call it – it is now.
  • By having faith, surrendering and listening to the world inside we can have superpowers.
  • The example of living in Ashram, sleeping 5 hours, and being energized and having surreal clarity and sharpness of the mind – this was amazing! It felt so empowering to learn to let go of the noisy brain and concentrate only on the inside.  Imagine hours of silence inside the mind…no negative or any other thoughts rushing through. It is all possible and it is all in our hands.

Being open and letting go of the common and familiar helped embrace new experiences in Ashram, either the Holi celebration, early wake up, painful positions or throwing cow poop in the fire with the certain finger positions in obedience of the sacred ceremony and then accepting the cookie from the Guru’s hands with the same hands. Talk about experiences!

‘It’s a cruel and random world, but the chaos is all so beautiful.’ ~ Hiromu Arakawa

Varanasi, was yet another powerful drop in the ‘let-go jar’. I was intentionally ignoring the travel guides and reading about this place so the experience would be more real and with no expectations.

Varanasi made my eyes sore and even my camera was unable to capture the full range of the conflicting scene of one of the oldest cities in the world. The extremes of India looked the strongest there. The contrast of life and death, darkness and light was mesmerizingly powerful. They say the city changes you.

The most disturbing mix of so many things and concepts at one place and one time: the city is so dense, so concentrated and overly saturated.

The Ganges is worshiped and the water is considered holy, but the amount of dirt and disorder on the riverbanks is beyond striking. The water is polluted with all kinds of dirt, plastic, yet the locals bathe there religiously and wash their clothing.

Aside from washing and bathing, bones left from the bodies after cremation are put in the water and sometimes serve as food for dogs. And at the same time the beautiful sets of flowers in observance of the sacred ceremonies are being set away to float on the water in hopes of purification.

Dare to try a sip of this holy smoothie from the Ganges? Yes, you can and we did!

Some people come to Varanasi to reach deep levels of meditation, do yoga or just sit and be aware. Ironically they do it next to rest houses where sick people are kept right before they leave their bodies. Those people come to the rest houses with full awareness and expectation of death.

The powerful flow of energy, the Varanasi is famous for, is somehow mixed harmoniously with the flow of dirt, dead bodies and disabled people surrendering to the power of the water for the purification from the vicious cycle of life.

Directly behind the river is a labyrinth of filthy streets filled with burning piles of trash, dirty cows, flies, dogs and smells of oldness and decay.

Overwhelming persistent flow of the needy children with sad, sometimes harsh, sometimes greedy or friendly eyes… They look at you with such deep sorrow… At some point I could not look any longer, not at them, not at the town itself.

(If Karma theory is true, the thought of how bad the good half of the population of the country was in the previous lives to be in this extreme sickness and pain now was blowing my mind.)

The strong feeling of wonder and repulsion was rising inside my mind that had trouble comprehending the whole scene.

What mattered at that point is to see life between good and bad for what we know or see it. “Does new life grow out of rotting and decaying matter?”

Being inside and letting go of the external at this moment made the noisy thinking machine surrender again, let go and be present in the now.

The perfect quote came to my sight right after:

“Only if we are still enough inside and the noise of thinking subsides can we become aware that there is a hidden harmony here, a sacredness, a higher order in which everything has its perfect place and could not be other than what it is and the way it is.”

Being in the complete chaos, or at least letting the mind to put labels on the place around – either chaotic or disturbing… somehow gave me the feeling of the surreal clarity.

May be there was an inconceivable order to this place, that to the mind looked like chaos, because it was unable to understand it.

“It is beyond the mental category of good and bad. You cannot understand it through thought, but you can sense it when you let go of the thought, become still and alert, and don’t try to underhand or explain. Only then can you be aware of the sacredness of the forest. As soon as you sense the hidden harmony, that sacredness, you realize that, you become a conscious participant in it. In this way, nature can help you become realigned with the wholeness of life”.

Being in India does something to a person. It is impossible to come out of the India untouched as it shows such ‘raw’ side of life – joy or sadness. It is a country of wonders and extremes.

A Peek Into Indian Ashram Life Through The Eyes of American Yogis

Some trips energize you and inspire you to live your life in a moment and to follow your passions, other trips relax and rejuvenate both body & mind, some turn into adventures, and others help to create long-lasting friendships, some even change your life values and outlooks, while others reinforce your long-forgotten promises and commitments to oneself. India can do all of it and much more, if you let it.

Today, a few people from our group trip to India share their experiences and memories from the ashram. The post is long but full of amazing insights so get a cup of chai and enjoy!

Incredible Beauty and Ugliness

Irina Z. a talented music teacher and a romantic at heart:

India, India… It is really incredible country in every way. The beauty and the ugliness. The wonderful smell of all the imaginable spices and the nauseating “aroma” of the products of human and animal existence. The sparkle of the palaces and temples and unimaginable poverty and misery.

And the beauty of their spirituality and philosophy, exposure to which is very beneficiary to the soul, especially young people souls, that are greatly spoiled by our western hectic and demanding lifestyle.

And the markets! Bargaining, bargaining. It was such a tiring fun:) You get so tired of bargaining and at the same time feel almost addicted to it. What is the real price? You will never know:)

It is an amazing country, and both, my friend Maryana and I, had a great time. Even more than that, she is a yoga addict now:)

Discovering Headspace and Freedom From Technology

Gillian B (A Wellness Consultant and a Yoga Instructor from Toronto):

Wow, what an experience this has been so far, full of lectures, devotional songs, pranayama, amazing vegetarian meals and of course yoga!

I spent the entire 8 hour ride to the ashram looking out the window soaking in all that I could.  The roadside was scattered with all sorts of little tent vendors selling everything from fruits and jewelry to cell phones and satellite receivers. My favorite part was passing through more rural areas where entire families were working together preparing or harvesting crops and loading them into these huge multi coloured trucks.  Life here is so simple compared to the hustle and bustle of city living in North America.

The whole experience has allowed me to take a step back from the life I live and look at it from a fresh new perspective.  I have been enjoying time to myself where I am completely disconnected from both phone and internet to contemplate and reflect on things that want and I need to change. My journal has been hearing from me quite a bit…boy does it feel good to have the space to just THINK! In North America, we live in a constant state of stimulation and distraction, too many notifications of this and that, I am way too connected, way to accessible!!! I have realized how very precious my headspace is and will be taking immediate action when I get home, a mental distraction cleansing if you will.

Gillian’s Impressions of Holi:

We were fortunate enough to experience one of India’s major festivals, Holi, the festival of colour. The day of fun and games, running around throwing brilliantly coloured paint and water on anyone and everyone! The meaning behind Holi, is that colour represents love, blessings and prosperity. Following the law of attraction, the more you throw out there to the Universe (or on people) , the more you will get back.

This was an experience like no other… it was more fun than all Halloweens in my life combined. We had scheduled it to begin after our breakfast break, but the fun got started a bit early, as people were surprised with a face full of green powder before oatmeal was served! Normally, this would have really freaked me out and I would have probably steered clear but I embraced the experience and had SO much fun!  All of the Sanyasins, who are normally, quite, reserved, proper and respectful, were running around joyfully with funny colored faces, buckets of water and half their clothes on. Holi is a day where people of all ages can let loose and reveal the playful child within all of us.

Standing down on the lawn amongst all of the chaos, I stopped for a moment and watched the pearls of bright purple powder, mixing with water, turning into liquid in the palm of my hand. There was something very beautiful about it all. A bucket of water over my head quickly brought me back from that moment of observation.

I spent a full hour in the ‘shower’ after getting a face full of that same purple paint, scrubbing and scrubbing! This experience was slightly traumatizing, I let out a few tears when I realized the purple stained parts of my hair. Looking at myself in the mirror I told myself that all is well, and from that moment forward I embraced my new tidied look, after all it was evidence of yet another amazing and unique experience on my first Indian adventure.

Afterwards, Surykant asked us what we enjoyed about Holi. Everyone in our group responded with different things like: ‘A new experience’, ‘feeling like a child again’, or ‘interacting with the Indian people and just enjoying their company’. Suryakant shook his head after each reply as if he was looking for a particular answer. Then explained that our responses were the result of us analyzing past events.  We enjoyed it so much because we were present in every moment, living in the now.  This was very refreshing to hear and opened the gates for a new direction for my mind to contemplate.

Making Friends With Myself

Natalya Nova, an amazing photographer and a movie director with a passion for authentic beauty and touching people’s souls with her work.

I was going to India without any expectations. I was ready to experience fully whatever will come my way and interesting things did happen.

First we went to Haridwar or “ The gate of God”, a city around Delhi where meat and alcohol isn’t allowed. I’m not really a drinker but I love meat so I was curious to experience a fully vegetarian lifestyle. Our fun group stayed in Haridwar’s ashram for a week. Ashram’s teachers planned out a week of daily activities for us starting with a 4am wake up call and a 5am meditation class up to 9pm Q&A session. Besides meditation, we did pranayamas and yoga, listened to the spiritual discourses and spent solo time contemplating.

I tried meditation before I came to ashram and I definitely experienced God’s presence in my life but being in close proximity to the people who could truly guide us to the next level  led to some significant breakthroughs for most of us.

Vedanta, an ancient Indian philosophy, was the focus of most lectures but I never felt any pressure to accept it if it didn’t go along with my personal beliefs. I was at a point of my life when I desperately needed answers to some questions and, in a way, a confirmation to the answers I already had. Let me tell you one thing, every time I desperately want something it magically happens! While I went through a lot of physical pain that week (try sitting cross-legged for 10 hours a day!) I had some amazing revelations.

At one point while meditating I had a vision of having a fight with myself. Someone inside of me screamed that I am torturing her and that I don’t love her. I bursted into tears, I tried to tell her that we are friends and that I do love her, that we have to go through that together. It sounds crazy writing about it now but at that moment it made perfect sense. I did have a fight with my physical body and my mental body and the goal was to move beyond them to the soul, to the pure consciousness.

Towards the end of our stay I ashram I reached the level of a complete piece within myself and within the surroundings: no hot water was putting a smile on my face, lack of sleep – big deal! My energy was 100 out at 10, I felt like no matter where I am I can have that feeling inside of me and nobody can take it away from me. I felt like I was set free.

After the ashram, we went to Delhi, Varanassi, Agra and Jaipur for sightseeing. India felt uplifting and charming on one side but rough and cruel on the other. I feel like you have to be mentally prepared to travel to India. It’s not for everyone. Seeing so much poverty around us was very overwhelming and sad. Being in a group where everyone wants different things was a good test of patience for all of us – a test on whether we learned anything from our stay at the ashram.

I’m super happy that I did this trip, that I had the revelations that I was waiting for and I can’t wait for what’s next.

Breathing Your Way To Health and Balance

Tanya

It was truly amazing to study advanced techniques of pranayama in ashram during our recent trip to India.  Prana (life force) and Ayama (control) is control of the flow of the life force. Pranayama is a technique for regulating one’s all emotional and mental states, it induces direct changes in the respiratory system, the autonomic nervous system and endocrine system. Emotions such as anger, depression and fear all have their roots in irregular breathing. As a massage practitioner who focuses on the massage therapy of the abdomen and diaphragm, I highly recommend pranayama techniques to my clients, especially in pre and post surgery cases. They learn to consciously alter their breathing and attain a calm state of mind through smooth, abdominal or diaphragmatic breathing. By inspiration, expiration and retention in pranayama there is a rise and fall of diaphragm and contraction and relaxation of the abdominal muscles which give constant movement and massage to the bowels and digestive organs. I am excited to share newly learned advanced pranayama techniques and will be devoted to further exploration of the science of breath. Our studies in ashram have been extremely valuable in understanding the benefits of pranayama. As our teachers in ashram would say – the breath forms a bridge between the consciousness and the unconsciousness.

There are another 2 incredibly inspiring stories that I will save for tomorrow. If you missed my ramifications on India, you can read them here.

Saturday Inspiration and Information

Welcome to the first edition of I&I!

Here I will share everything that attracted my attention this week: from tasty and healthy recipes, to insightful articles and lectures, from ayurvedic Spring tips to really fun total body workouts.

Please share what inspired or interested you this week, too!

Read:

1. Claire from Holistic and Wellness Project did a feature on me this week. I share some of my tips for healthy and balanced living in a busy city here.

2. How your Ayurvedic dosha affects the way you work and what projects you like the most.

Abstract: Vata people lack consistency for long and can change their views frequently. The real performance from this group can be seen during short term and high expectation projects. Thus their high energy levels can be used positively. A Vata individual needs to take frequent breaks compared to others.

A Pitta person will be generally intelligent, focused, full of energy and passionate about his interests. But simultaneously, an imbalanced Pitta represents lots of anger, agitation, violence and indiscriminate judgments. These are people with high determination.

Unbalanced Kapha individuals tend to be slow, lethargic and stubborn. But a balanced and happy Kapha person makes the best boss and manager. A Kapha individual is balanced at work, grounded and a cautious decision maker.

3. You can be Overfed and Undernourished! Find out how this is possible here

Workout

1. Getting Bikini ready with this 20 Minutes Abs and Legs Workout with Amanda Russel  and this Bootcamp workout from Caseey Ho at Pop Pilates. She is so much fun!

2. Or chillout with this breath awareness meditation :) . Better do both!

Cook:

Lot’s of tasty things to try this weekend!

1. Spinach Cake from Elana’s Pantry. Gotta love the greens! Looks like a perfect breakfast!

2. BBQ Hummus from creative Rande behind Vegetable Centric Kitchen. Summer flavor!

3. Ayurvedic Kale Lemonade with Ginger and Apple. John from Joyful Belly is amazing when it comes to balanced dosha specific recipes!

4. Not in the mood for Lemonade and would rather load up on probiotics? Check out this simple recipe for Almond Milk Kefir from Linda Wagner.

5. Can’t go without a tasty and healthy dessert! Paleo Coconut Macaroons or for vegans Cinnamon Spiced Sweet Kidney Bean Spread.

Watch:

After a good workout, a healthy meal, you can relax on a couch and watch something educational. Check out this CBS news video about the dangers of sugar and John Douillard’s short video about ayurvedic view on ’5 small meals a day’ eating pattern. Is it really that healthy? In John’s opinion it can lead to Diabetes!

Happy weekend!

Don’t forget to subscribe to receive email updates about new posts. This Tue and Wed several people from India trip will share their experiences and pictures! Their stories blew my mind! I can’t wait to share them with you!

Ayurvedic Eats: Vegetables Baked in Goat Cheese Sauce

Hello Wellness Warriors,

Hope you are hungry! I have a new yummy recipe for you today. Before we get to the recipe, I would like to share some thoughts on improving Spinach and Yoga :) . If you have some ideas or thoughts, too, please share! I would love to hear your feedback!

A friend of mine who is passionate about health and trying new recipes, asked me to add more ayurvedic recipes to Spinach and Yoga. Your wish is my command. Well, not really, but I do listen to the suggestions :) For Katerina and everyone else, who wants to add more ayurvedic recipes to the daily menu, I will post one recipe every Thursday!

Besides that I was thinking about introducing some weekly themes:

Tuesday - Food For Thought articles. Something along these lines: 10 Interesting Facts About Food Combining or Change Your Life With Positive Affirmations
ThursdayAyurvedic Eats with recipes like today or like this one – Kelp Noodles with Edamame in a Creamy Butternut Squash Sauce
SaturdayInspiration and Information with links from my fellow bloggers, inspirational quotes, cool workouts and yoga routines, movies, or lectures and other things that grabbed my attention during the past week.

What do you think of the planned changes?

It seems that Spring flowers, sun, and warmer weather inspire people to cleanse and detox. Or maybe it is just the thought of the beach and a bikini that re-awakens long forgotten New Year’s resolutions… On the big scale of things it doesn’t matter what motivates you to lighten up your plate and include more veggies in the diet, as long as you do it!

Vegetables are great for alkalizing the body, cleansing the pipes with fiber, and, of course, stimulating weight loss. The good thing is that cooking vegetables is easy and quick! This recipe is simple and easy to make. (It basically made itself in the oven while I was jumping around to Insanity with my boyfriend.) Goat cheese adds rich creaminess to fibrous veggies, and sweet potato add notes of sweet softness. Spices give the dish a kick and help to digestion. (ayurvedic tricks!)

Sweet Potato, Broccolini and Fennel Baked in Goat Cheese Sauce

Sweet Potato, Broccoli, Fennel with Goat Cheese

  • 1 Large sweet potato
  • 1 small bunch of young broccolini
  • 1 Large fennel bulb
  • 1 small container or roll of fresh organic goat cheese. I get mine from Star of Patches goat farm on Union Square and love it!!!
  • 1 red pepper
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 ½ cup water
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp ground coriander
  • ¼ tsp cayenne
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp basil or several fresh leaves
  • salt to taste or dulse flakes

Slice up sweet potato and cover the bottom of a glass or ceramic baking dish. Cut up fennel in pieces and cover sweet potato. Next put broccolini on top.
Mix all the spices, garlic, salt or dulse flakes, water, goat cheese, and red bell pepper and blend on high speed until smooth.
Pour the sauce over vegetables, cover with a lid and bake at 350 for 30-40 mins (until vegetables are done).
Serve with quinoa, as I did, or as a side dish :)

What are you eating this Spring? Are you doing any kind of detox to lighten up?

6 Life-Changing Lessons Directly From the Wisdom Source in India

It took me awhile to decide on the best way to share with you all the lessons and valuable experiences from India. I wish you were there for yourself to experience the ashram’s bliss with the inspirational lectures, thoughtful discussions, energizing sun salutations at sunrise on the Ganges shores, and the light and pure vegetarian home-made food. The entire experience was transformational in many aspects. The best part is that every one out of our 11 people group learned something slightly different and perceived the experience in a very personal way. A few people will be sharing their experiences and lessons from India trip in the coming weeks.

At Taj Mahal

Our India Ashram group

While reading through memoirs can be fun, I always want to make sure that you get out something useful from your time spent on this blog. When you set a clear intention, the answer emerges. Waiting on inspiration to write up the India report 2012 paid off, in my opinion, but I will let you be the judge of it. There will be two parts of the Ashram Wisdom Lessons: one today and the 2nd one next Tue. Don’t forget to sign up for the email updates on the right side bar to make sure you don’t miss the 2nd part. Let me know if you found this post interesting in the comments. I would love to reconnect and chat with you now that I am back!

Vedanta and Yoga Lessons from the Ashram

  • The internal world is the most beautiful place. We are attracted to places that have beautiful views and a long interesting history. History and views of Varanasi, Agra, and Rishikesh called out my name this year. I traveled to another side of the world with a group of inspiring people to see meditation caves in Himalayas, watch the Ganges take its beginning and turn into a sacred river for millions of people worshiping it, to get lost in the windy tiny streets of the most ancient city in the world, and to marry a couple at Taj Mahal:

Marrying Jennifer and Mark at Taj Mahal!

to celebrate the most colorful holiday on the earth:

    Playing Holi at the ashram

to eat fresh spicy vegetarian food, and to admire rare jewels of Jaipur.  Surprisingly, what impressed me the most were not the wonders of marble art work or the ancient temples, instead it was a quiet peaceful spot that I found inside of me. The world that you see when you close your eyes, is the most beautiful place. Calmer than a beach at sunset, more picturesque than the snow-topped mountains, and more vibrant that a forest full of birds singing. It also doesn’t cost anything to travel there. It doesn’t take time to get there. It is always present in you as soon as you draw your attention inwards.

  • True happiness is not based on ever-changing external things. It can be uncomfortable to take responsibility for your own happiness but it is better than leaving it in the hands of someone else. Your decide how you feel! Don’t believe me, check out Seth Godin’s post on happiness. One of our teachers at the ashram used to say: a true yogi feels joy and does things out of joy, not for the joy. How powerful is that?! I always notice that when I feel inspired and peaceful, I want to share this feeling with my students. I want to give them a piece of it through yoga classes. It is totally different than teaching yoga to feel re-affirmed and assured that you are worthy. I used to get upset if my class was empty. It made me feel like a failure. Now, I don’t let the number of students effect my internal state of happiness. If people come to take my class, I’m happy; if there is no one there, I’m happy. It is a work in progress but I feel less dependent on my work to make me happy. Instead I choose do my work because I’m happy!
  • True relaxation requires hard work. We are used to think of relaxation as collapsing on the couch in front of the TV or melting away in unconscious deep sleep somewhere on a horizontal surface. While both provide a minimal amount of rest for the body and a nervous system, efficiency-wise both of these methods suck! Resting in front of a tv is the same as washing greasy dishes in ice cubes – not very smart or effective. When the time is a precious resource and a huge part of population can’t find 8 hours to sleep, it is crucial for survival to have the tools to restore quicker. Mastering effective relaxation requires some work just like any other tool. Think of it as your relaxation muscle that needs to be trained.

    Practicing Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is a boot camp for your relaxation muscle. While yoga nidra has a deeper purpose than just recharging our batteries, it helps with that, too. No one can meditate, if tired, you will just fall asleep! Feeling rested is one of the first steps to enlightenment, if you wish:). No exhausted enlightened folks out there;)! Once you train your relaxation muscle through regular yoga nidra, then you will be able to get into a deep state of relaxation on your own very quickly. Then your power naps, will be SUPER powered! We did yoga nidra twice a day at the ashram in India and it was the first time when I felt full of energy on 4 hours of sleep for 3 weeks! Talk about SUPER powers! For best results, try to do it everyday for 2 weeks and let me know how it works for you! Start with Guided Relaxation – Yoga Nidra or Classical Yoga Nidra 37mins

  • All the answers are deep inside. You are your guru, your master, your teacher, whatever you want to call it. If you ask a question, the answer will emerge. To do that you need to learn to be still and to hear your internal voice. Some people achieve this state when they run or knit, some when they meditate. Almost any repetitive movement can put you into a highly perceptive state. Meditation does it best, however.

Meditating in a cave at the bottom of the Himalayas

If you are scared of meditation, start with Yoga Nidra!

  • Whatever we identify with, that we become. Your thoughts turn into your reality, whether you want it or not. We choose to identify with disease and become one with it. Maybe that’s why some people get sick often while others don’t get sick at all?! It can also be the reason behind why some people have so much trouble losing weight – their own picture of themselves is fat. What you visualize and focus on creates your body and everything that happens to you. Thoughts are food for the mind. We spend hours reading about nutrition and thinking about what to eat but we rarely scrutinize our thoughts as closely as the restaurant menu. If you chose to feed your body with a clean highly nutritional food, choose to feed your mind with positive and kind thoughts! Start with daily positive affirmations.
  • Body is not me, it is my instrument and a trusted companion in life. Body has to be light and healthy to let you focus on finding the answers to the important questions and True Happiness. The concept of what is our body is tricky and controversial concept. Some people believe that we are one whole, where mind, body, and spirit are one. I think mind, body, and spirit are connected and unless one is dead it is impossible to disconnect them. All 3 are interdependent and always effect on each other. However, I’m not certain any more that all three are one and the same.
  • Yoga is an effective and a multidimensional tool. If you wish, it can be your tool to attain a healthy body. If you explore yoga deeper, it can offer a recipe for happiness, bliss, or enlightenment, whatever you chose to call it. Unfortunately, we often use only 1 dimension of it – asanas. Asanas are great for our body but their effect on the mental state and emotions is limited.

    Sun Salutations on the Ganges

Think about it this way: yoga has 8 ingredients: yamas and niyamas, asanas, pranayama, control of senses, concentration, meditation, and deep absorption. You can’t make a brownie using just the cacao! You need flour, eggs, butter, vanilla, etc. Same way, if you want the full taste of what yoga has to offer, you need to practice the combination of asanas, breath, and meditation. Breathing practices is an amazing tool to re-energize the entire body! Meditation and concentration raise awareness and allow for a much greater control of your mind and emotions. Why would you want to control your mind and emotions? Well, remember that whatever thoughts you have is what your reality looks like.

What do you think of these lessons? Have you had any revelations lately?

With Indian Bindi:)

More pics from India are here, here,  and here :) Enjoy!

If you want to chat about yoga or try out some basic meditation, come to Strala Yoga on Tue night at 7pm. I will be sharing everything that I learned in India from my Vedanta and yoga teachers! Hope to see you there!

Yours Calm and Happy!

Ayurvedically Designed Springtime Juice Recipe

After a month of traveling through the Northern India and then taking a quick weekend break in Miami, I am finally back home and back to my green juices! Oh, dear Omega, how I missed you!

It feels good to be back to a health food abundant NYC, especially in the Spring when the greens on the Farmer’s Markets are fresher than ever and the trees in all the parks start to bloom.

Central Park Blooming Trees from Inhabitat 'Best Places To See Spring'

Our trip to India was full of adventures and memorable experiences that I will talk about in the upcoming posts in the near future. For now, take a look at the first album from the ashram. We had a few professional photographers clicking their cameras nonstop so there will be many more pics coming soon!

While I am busy writing about India, Vedanta, meditation, and marriages at Taj Mahal, check out my Spring inspired ayurvedically designed Kapha balancing juice. Spring is a Kapha season. When Kapha is aggravated, it shows up as weight gain, allergies, lethargy, sluggishness, and water retention.

A good way to reduce Kapha is with a diet full of Spring abound greens, spices, and warm herbal teas. Check out Ayurvedic Spring shopping list for what to eat and what to skip in your diet. This juice includes tons of mineral and vitamin-rich young greens, digestion stimulating and blood sugar-balancing spices: cinnamon and ginger; and bloating preventing fennel. What more to wish in a green drink?!

Ayurvedically Designed Kapha Balancing  Juice
1/2 bunch of parsley
4 leafs of Swiss Chard
1/2 pink grapefruit
1/2 cucumber
2” ginger
2 green stalks fennel
Dash of cinnamon

Juice and sip slowly! Remember all the Ayurvedic Juice drinking guidelines!!! If you are feeling a need to intensify the cleansing power of this juice, add a few stalks of dandelion. This amazing weed has some amazing super powers when it comes to detox and weight loss. I wrote about it awhile a go here.

While you sip this amazing fat-busting nectar, check out this movie Hungry for Change. You can watch it online for free until the Sat night, so don’t miss it!

And afterwards dance to this AMAZING song Shiva Sambhu!

How was your month? What are you waiting for the most from Spinach and Yoga in the near future besides all the India stories?
